Hump day humpback whale fact: Repeated breaching helps calves build vital energy stores and muscle needed to migrate back to feeding grounds by increasing myoglobin levels in their tissue. A protein found in muscle cells, myoglobin is iron- and oxygen-binding and likely extends humpbacks’ breath-holding ability when diving!

We advocate for whales and dolphins at the highest

We advocate for whales and dolphins at the highest levels. Over the past weeks, the Conservation Committee of the International Whaling Commission (IWC) has been holding virtual meetings, in preparation of the next IWC69 plenary (main) meeting that will take place during September in Lima, Peru. PWF's Barbara Galletti attended these virtual meetings as part of the Chilean delegation. She provided updates on Chile-Peru southern right whale conservation management plan and the proposal to assess the socio-economic value of whales and dolphins. The work was very well received, and the proposed workplan was endorsed by the Conservation Committee and will move forward for a final decision at the IWC69.

The Conservation Committee conducts an impressive amount of work that concerns whale and dolphin populations including bycatch, ship strikes, whale watching, marine debris, noise pollution, etc. At ICW69, decisions will be made that will either positively or negatively affect whale and dolphin conservation.
